March 18 – He Knows Us, We Know Him

“I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me,”   John 10:14  (NASB)

Jesus had said that He was giving His Life for us so that we might have access to becoming one of His. We have accepted what Jesus did for us in dying on the cross and by faith we have become His sheep.  The visual image of sheep appears often in both Old Testament and in Jesus' teaching in the New Testament.  Jesus considered those who believed in Him as His flock like sheep and Himself as our Good Shepherd.  In our verse today we are reminded that Jesus knows each one of us who are following Him today.  He knows who  we are and what each one of us needs.  He knows what we are thinking and what our motives are.  Yes, our good Lord is our good shepherd and He'll be watching us as we follow Him today.  Let's follow Him closely.  In our verse Jesus also says that His sheep know Him.  How wonderful to know Him today.  And to trust Him to meet our needs.

January 6 – His Loving Eye Watching

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;  I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32:8 (NIV)

Since we are still new in this year, we have selected this fitting promise from God's word.  We are all looking ahead to the new year which has begun.  We may have some questions still unanswered about how thing will go in the days and months ahead.  It seems like so much is uncertain in the world and in our countries' governments.  Whatever the situation is we can trust in the faithfulness of God for every day, every week and all through the year.  Yes, we can be sure that our Lord is with us and will be because He has promised to teach and counsel us.  He has promised to watch over us with His loving eye.  And, we can be confident that He knows what is ahead for us as He guides us with His teaching and instructions.  Trust this promise today, tomorrow and every day that comes.

July 31 – He Watches and Helps

“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:2 (NIV)

Isn't it wonderful to know that our great God who made the whole universe gets involved in our lives even though we are so small in comparison? The psalm we are looking at today reminds us how God helps us – this is a promise. There are eight verses in Psalm 121 and in five of them we read that the Lord watches over us. Let's read one other of these verses – the last one, verse 8. “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”  The promise is that as we come and go each day my friend, let's not forget that our Lord is actively watching over us. And, let's remember that it is He, the Maker of heaven and earth. He actually pays attention to us.

“Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.” Psalm 4:6-7 (NIV)

David was comparing His experience with that of other people of his day. People around him were looking for happiness in material things such as good harvests in their grain fields and in their vineyards. In contrast to this David had learned to trust the Lord. He had found true joy in the confidence which he had in God. So in our verse he prayed to God to watch over him. When God looked upon him it was like a light shining on his life. We can have the same experience of God watching over us making everything light and full of joy. So let us pray with David that the light of God’s face will shine on us and fill our hearts with joy.

“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,” Psalm 33:18 (NIV)

There are some people who would not be thrilled with the thought that the Lord is watching their activities. I want to believe that you are glad to have God watching over you, that you are thrilled to have His eyes following your movements. This will be true as you revere and respect the Lord and as you trust in his unfailing love - there is nothing to fear. If we know that God truly loves us, we will be glad to think that He is watching us. This means that He will see whenever we are thankful, rejoice, and pray and He will see when we have special needs and He will do for us what is the very best.

“As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” Psalm 103:13-14 (NIV)

These words remind us of one reason why God has a special feeling for us who have become His children by faith. It is because He knows where we are coming from. He has been watching us since the very beginning just like an earthly father watches his child from the day of its birth. Yes, our Lord knows each of us and has been watching us since before we were born. He knows we are human with human weaknesses. Still He loves us and is patient with us when we make mistakes and when we fail to grow. “The Lord has compassion.”

“Sing about a fruitful vineyard: I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.” Isaiah 27:2-3 (NIV)

The Bible reminds us over and over about how concerned God is about His people. When the Lord made this statement, He was speaking especially about His chosen people Israel. He spoke of them as being His vineyard. God has His special people today, too, and if you have trusted in Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are His special possession. He’s taking care of you, watching over you, giving you what you need, and guarding you from harm as the owner of a vineyard would do. Apply this Scripture to yourself. This is how the Lord thinks of you.

“The Lord will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life. The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121: 4-5 (NIV)

This means that the Lord is watching over all aspects of our lives. And, of course, that fits the concept of a God who knows everything and a God who is everywhere. So our Lord is concerned not only with our spiritual welfare, but with everything that happens in our lives. And it is not only the important happenings that he watches over. Notice that He promises to watch over our comings and goings. We can include all our movements. If that is true, it includes all that we do. What a wonderful God we have!
