November 19 – Constantly Involved

“What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?” Isaiah 5:4 (ESV)

Our passage today comes from a poem, a song, and tells the story of one who carefully plants a vineyard which fails to produce fruit.  It is a picture of God taking care of His people.  God always does what is best for those who belong to Him and in the time of Isaiah, it was the people of Israel. Today we who have believed and accepted the free gift of salvation from Jesus are God's focus for His care and we are His people.  Our verse today has two questions. God asked His people through the prophet what more could He have done for them? He pictures His chosen people as being His vineyard. He had done so much, but they had not produced the fruit He expected. Instead of good grapes, all they returned were wild worthless grapes. The promise we have from this is, God is doing so much for each of us each day. He loves us and he gives us all we need to produce the fruit of righteousness He expects. He is working in each of our lives and we need to believe and respond to His love and constant involvement.

“What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it?” Isaiah 5:4a (NIV)

God always does what is best for those who belong to Him. In the Old Testament days His attention was centered on the chosen people of Israel. Today He focuses on those who have accepted His Son as Savior. Our verse today is a question God asked His people through the prophet. He here pictures His people as being His vineyard. He had done so much for them, but they had not produced the fruit that He expected. So He reminds them of all He had done for them. One real lesson we can get from this is that God is doing so much for each of us today. He loves us and does what is best for us. He is working in each of our lives and we need to be aware of His constant involvement.

“Sing about a fruitful vineyard: I, the Lord, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.” Isaiah 27:2-3 (NIV)

The Bible reminds us over and over about how concerned God is about His people. When the Lord made this statement, He was speaking especially about His chosen people Israel. He spoke of them as being His vineyard. God has His special people today, too, and if you have trusted in Jesus Christ as your Savior, you are His special possession. He’s taking care of you, watching over you, giving you what you need, and guarding you from harm as the owner of a vineyard would do. Apply this Scripture to yourself. This is how the Lord thinks of you.
