“What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?” Isaiah 5:4 (ESV)
Our passage today comes from a poem, a song, and tells the story of one who carefully plants a vineyard which fails to produce fruit. It is a picture of God taking care of His people. God always does what is best for those who belong to Him and in the time of Isaiah, it was the people of Israel. Today we who have believed and accepted the free gift of salvation from Jesus are God's focus for His care and we are His people. Our verse today has two questions. God asked His people through the prophet what more could He have done for them? He pictures His chosen people as being His vineyard. He had done so much, but they had not produced the fruit He expected. Instead of good grapes, all they returned were wild worthless grapes. The promise we have from this is, God is doing so much for each of us each day. He loves us and he gives us all we need to produce the fruit of righteousness He expects. He is working in each of our lives and we need to believe and respond to His love and constant involvement.
