October 26 – Savior of the World

“And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.’” – John 4:41-42 (ESV)

Imagine, this woman in our verse was a woman of ill-repute who came to the water well at a time when she would not have to encounter any other people. But one day, she did encounter another person, a man. Not just a man but a Jew and she was a Samaritan. In the day, the two did not meet, did not speak, had nothing to do with each other. Jews despised Samaritans because the latter were mixed race, not pure. Part Jew and part Assyrian. Jesus of Nazareth had purposed to be there at that appointed time. He knew everything about the woman. He wanted her to know that He was the promised Messiah. Jesus reveals who He is to this woman who had been married five times and was now living with a man she was not married to. He promises eternal life to her if she will believe. She does and she spreads the news. Many believed first because of her testimony and then because of what Jesus told them. He stayed two days in their town and they believed He was the Savior of the world. He still is and will be forever.

December 24 – The Eve of Christmas

“For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NASB)

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5 (ESV)

What does Christmas mean to those of us who belong to the family of God? Today and always it is good to keep in mind that at Christmas we celebrate what God did to make it possible for us to join His family. Two verses, one from the Gospel of Luke and one from the Gospel of John bring to us today’s promises. The promised Messiah’s coming was fulfilled in person the day Jesus was born in Bethlehem. We read what the angel told the Bethlehem shepherds recorded in Luke. In John we read again of the light that Jesus was and brought to earth. Light which evil darkness is unable to snuff out. The world does not comprehend this light and so remains in darkness.  It was not only the shepherds who needed a Savior. We needed a Savior too, and He did come to save us. Let's remember what a great difference it has been in our lives, to have a Savior. Jesus has saved us from sin and from sin's eternal punishment. And He saves us today from uncertainty, fear, and confusion. Let's remember this promise today as we hear the words of our verse read.

December 14 – Praising and Thanking

“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.”  Hebrews 13:15 (NASB)

Each one of us who believe that Jesus is the Son of God and our Savior have a sacrifice we can offer up to God. During the days before Christmas we hear about the angels who sang praises to God when Jesus was born. We know that angels do sing praises to God in heaven and the Bible urges us to sing His praises too. That is the message of our verse today. The reason the angels keep singing praises to God is because they know how great and wonderful He is. The more we know about our Lord, the more we will want to praise Him. Let's be careful during these days of activity before Christmas that we do not let the lights and the beauty of decorations distract us and cause us to forget God's greatness and His love for us. As we sing carols of praise and thanksgiving, let's be sure to remember to really praise our God with all our hearts. It is a wonderful time of the years to continually offer our sacrifices. Let’s make our time of truly praising and thanking God for His wonderful gift of Jesus and eternal life.

December 22 – Hanukkah Begins

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NIV)

On the very night that Jesus, the Son of God was born, an angel was sent by the Father to announce the event to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem. God chose the shepherds to be the first, other than Mary and Joseph, to know that a promise had been fulfilled.  He said “a Savior has been born to you.”  The shepherds needed a Savior and they could personally benefit from His birth. Believing the words of the angels, the shepherds went to find the newborn baby.  After seeing and marveling at the event, they returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, exactly as it was told them.  Jesus was born for you and He was born for me, to be our Savior.  Each of us needs a Savior and He came for those in need.  What a great difference this has made in our lives. The promise of His coming was made as far back as the day Adam and Eve disobeyed God.  Let us listen to the angel’s message – “He is Christ the Lord.”

September 26 – None But Him

“And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me.” Isaiah 45:21b (NIV)

Two powerful truths and promises are given to us in this verse from the prophet of God, Isaiah.  First, is His message through Isaiah that apart from the God we worship there is none other.  Yes, there are many who claim to have another god who they worship.  The list is very long but as our God says here “there is none but me.”  Then in this verse there is something wonderful about the way God put two expressions together in these words. He said that He is a righteous God and He is a Savior. There is a beautiful connection between the two. When we think of our Lord as a righteous God we realize that He also wants His people to be righteous. He wants us to do what is right. We perhaps think of a righteous God as a just God who would punish those that fail to do right – that is how every other false god is said to be.  But only our God truthfully describes Himself as being a Savior.  Instead of wanting to punish those who fail, He wants to save them. And He promises those who believe will be saved from punishment. Thank God that He is righteous AND a Savior.

December 23 – Born to This Purpose, Born to Us

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”  Luke 2:11 (NIV)

We come back to this important announcement in the Gospel of Luke.  We've considered it once before, several days ago.  We do this to think again of the reason for His coming to earth.  The glitz and glamour that surrounds this time of the year as well as the many activities and commercial appeal can too easily cause us to lose focus on why the season is important to all.  The words the angel announced to the shepherds were important for them and they are important for us.  The shepherds response showed that they realized they needed a Savior.  The went immediately to find the baby.  They spread the news of what the angel had said, and the also praised God when they returned from seeing the baby.  Jesus came as a baby because we all needed a Savior.   As we have believed in Him He has saved us from the consequences of sin, the sin of rejecting God.  What a big difference that has made in our lives.  He has brought us to Himself by coming and becoming a human as we are.  He was born to us for this purpose.  We are His today if we have believed this Promise that He is the Messiah, the Lord.

December 12 - Who is Christ the Lord

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”  Luke 2:11 (ESV)

At the time of the birth of Jesus, there were several messages from heaven which told people on earth what an important event the birth was.  One message came through the angels who came to announce the birth to the shepherds near Bethlehem.  We read about this message in Luke's record in and today's verse from chapter 2 is part of that message.  We've considered that when the baby born in Bethlehem was given the name Jesus, this meant that He would save His people from their sins.  Now in our verse today the angel mentioned that He came as our Savior.  We also notice in our verse now that the baby would be Lord.  That is also a very important name.  When we see pictures of the manger scene with a baby lying there, let's remember that He, Jesus our Lord, deserves honor from us in our lives each day.  He is our Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  It is good to understand Jesus, had the title Christ which means, “the anointed One”, or “the chosen One.”  Jesus is His human name as announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:31), and Christ is His title, as the promised, chosen, anointed, Son of God.

What does Christ mean?

December 31 – The Last and First

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” Philippians 3:12 (ESV)

The last day of the year is here. It is a time for looking back over the past. We are flooded with all kinds of retrospectives about what has happened in our world – especially the lives of celebrities.  But this is also a time for looking forward to our future. For those of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior it makes a good time In our Christian lives to remember that we are not living by ourselves. It is not the accomplishments of our life or of the lives of others. It is the accomplishments that God has done for us. Our Lord has goals for us to achieve in each of our lives and we achieve those goals only through trusting and following Him. We press on each day with these goals in mind so at the beginning of another year we can commit ourselves again to our Lord and ask Him to continue revealing to us His glorious purpose for each of our lives and provide for us the grace, strength and wisdom we need.  As we put ourselves into his hands we can be sure that He will show us how He loves us.  The promise we have is that Christ Jesus has made us His own, let's remember that and press on each day in the coming year.

December 24 – The Eve of Christmas

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NIV)

What does Christmas mean to those of us who belong to the family of God? Today and always it is good to keep in mind that at Christmas we celebrate what God did to make it possible for us to join His family.  The promise of the Messiah coming was fulfilled. As part of the Christmas story we read what the angel told the Bethlehem shepherds which are the words recorded in Luke chapter 2.

July 6 – Show, Guide, and Teach

“Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”  Psalm 25:4-5 (NIV)

These words for today come from a prayer by the psalmist David. This is a prayer that any of us can pray if we have believed in Jesus as our Savior. We can pray this way any time of the day or night. Whatever the time of day it is where you are as you read this it is a good time to rely on this promise. Our verse speaks of hope and we remind you that Christian hope is not wishful thinking or fingers crossed kind of hope that is commonplace today. For us our hope in God is confident expectation. Our verse speaks of a hope that is confident expectation focused on God. We can confidently expect God to help us in the morning, throughout the day, in the evening and anytime at night. Let's trust the God of our salvation and wait on him all the day as he teaches us His ways, His paths, and His truth.

February 14

“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”… “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.”  1 John 4:10, 16a (NIV)

Valentine's Day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a celebration observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them. Today, we are going to use Valentine’s Day to remind us of the love of God, our heavenly Father. We do know that God loves us. He demonstrated that in sending His Son to become our Savior. So having accepted Jesus and God’s offer of love, how do we live from then on? Our verse reminds us that we can know and rely on God’s love. We know it is true that when we face serious need in our Christian life, we can look to God for help and we can depend on His constant love? He loves you today my friend. Remember our verses.

January 12

“What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us.” 1 Corinthians 2:12 (NIV)

God has provided many blessings for those who accept His Son as Savior. It is true that as we read the Bible or hear someone teach it we learn about some of these blessings. Let us remember that those who wrote the Bible were inspired to write about these blessings. It is God the Holy Spirit who helps us understand what we read in these writings. The Holy Spirit can also help us in other ways to what God has planned for each one of us. Let us be sure our hearts are open to learn what the Spirit wants to teach us each day. Remember all those who have believed have received the Spirit who is from God and is God.

December 27

“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.” Psalm 107:21 (NIV)

For some people Christmas came and went and it is over. But if we know the real meaning of the coming of Jesus, we will keep on benefiting from that event every day as long as we live and on into eternity. If you are a child of God you have been stirred these days to thank God for sending His Son to be your Savior. You will not mind being reminded of His great unfailing love. And you will want to continue thanking Him for loving you and doing wonderful things for you. So let us listen to the psalmist and give thanks to the Lord today.

December 24 - Beginning of Hanukkah

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” Luke 2:11 (NIV)

On the very night that Jesus was born the angel came to tell the shepherds about the event. God chose the shepherds to be the first to hear personally. Believing the words of the angels, the shepherds went to find the newborn baby. After seeing and marveling at the event, they returned glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, exactly as it was told them. I would like to suggest that each of us can apply that message to ourselves personally. Jesus was born for you and for me, to be our Savior. Each of us needed a Savior and He came for you and for me. What a great difference this has made in our lives. Let us listen to the angel’s message – “He is Christ the Lord.”

December 19

“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:46 (NIV)

The lights at Christmas can remind us of the great light which the shepherds of Bethlehem saw and the star which the wise men followed. But more important is the fact that Jesus came as a Light for a darkened world. He, Himself, later explained this. As your Savior He has brought light into your life. It may be, however that we can go through dark hours at times. How should a believer deal with such experiences? The answer is in the words Jesus spoke about Himself in our verse today. He said that no one who believes in Him should stay in darkness. That is how to deal with a dark moment – just believe, trust in Him and the light will come.

June 13

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious.” 1 Peter 2:6-7a (NIV)

Jesus Christ is the cornerstone predicted in the Old Testament. If you have believed in Him as your Savior, He is the cornerstone of your faith – the basis of your eternal life. So what does Jesus mean to you? Isn’t He precious to you? Could you get along without Him? We are reading these verses today because we believe you will agree with Peter that Jesus is very precious to you and that you love Him more than anything else. So keep this truth before you today, "the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame."

February 27

“Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1 (NIV)

It is true that when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior we receive eternal life. We have an eternity to look forward to – an eternity to be spent in the presence of God in heaven. No longer do we think of this earthly life as the focus of our attention. We can set our hearts on things above. But the emphasis in this verse is on the present ministry of our Savior. What is Jesus doing at the right hand of God? He’s interceding for us – praying to God for us. That’s an important part of our focus. Let’s set our hearts on His position there and what it means to us.

February 10

“Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.” Psalm 31:3 (NIV)

We all have decisions to make every day. Most of them may not be of great importance, but they affect our living. David asked God to be his guide in life. When we accept Jesus as our Savior we become God’s children. We carry His name. We make decisions that affect the good name of our God. Therefore He is anxious to help us make the right decision so that His name is enhanced. That’s what David had in mind in expressing himself. So with us, when we look to God for His guidance it is not only because we want to benefit ourselves. It is for God’s benefit, too, and that is important.

February 9

“The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.” Isaiah 60:19 (NIV)

God has great plans for His people and He wants to show us what He has planned. If you are a child of God by faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior, I’m sure you are looking forward to the day of which the prophet was writing. We do so enjoy the light of the sun, especially this time of the year when we don’t always see it. And we enjoy moonlit nights. We thank God for these lights. But we are looking forward to a greater experience. It will be a time when we will see our “God in all His glory. He will be the center of our attention!
