March 9 – Always Our Light In Our Darkness

“You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”   Psalm 18:28  (NIV)

We are told by those who study these things that David composed this psalm and sang it when he had come through a difficult patch in his life.  David had many such times in his life running and hiding from King Saul who wanted to kill him.  Perhaps we do not have someone pursuing us to kill us but we all find ourselves in dark and difficult places in our life.  Our God is the same today as He was when He was watching over David.  Without God helping us we would find ourselves lost in that darkness.  But God keeps the light on for us.  God promises to turn our darkness into light, to help us see Him and the path He has made for us even when the darkness of many threats and trials descend on us.  Yes, life gets complicated and sometimes things happen to us and our family that makes seeing the way difficult.  But God is always with us and with this promise that if we turn to Him, we will see as He is our eternal light.  He will never leave us or desert us in darkness but will be with us always in light.

October 29 – Finding Strength

“David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.” 1 Samuel 30:6 (NIV)

David, many times in his life faced deadly dangers. As a shepherd, a warrior, anointed King, and King. His life was threatened many times and each time He knew where to go for help. Sometimes he would get distressed but He knew to turn to God in prayer and God gave Him victory over the ones who opposed and threatened him. We can have the same experience and receive the help we need from God. It is from God that we find and receive strength. Resting and trusting in God when things look dark and desperate is what God has called us to do. God will give us the ability to face our situation whatever it is, whatever threats exist. That  is our promise.

March 5 – He Will Help Us

“I cried like a swift or thrush, I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens. I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid!”  Isaiah 38:14 (NIV)

The words in this verse were recorded by the prophet Isaiah but were not his words. These are the words written by the King of Judah, King Hezekiah after he recovered from a very serious illness. We read these words today because there are times in our lives when our hearts are troubled by our circumstances. Our problems may not be as serious as King Hezekiah who had expected to die from his illness but sometimes they actually are that heavy on our hearts. However that might be we can turn to God. We can say and cry out as the Kind did, “I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid.” Yes, my friend, whatever it is that might cause our minds and our hearts to be troubled and broken, we can turn to God for help. And as He helped the King of Judah, he will help us too according to His will as we rely on Him.
