This is how the psalmist sums up a song of praise. In the previous verses he has praised God for helping His people when they were severely threatened. They had been in great danger but God had protected them, and the reason why God had been able to do that was explained by who He is – the maker of heaven and earth. That is why we can depend on our God to help us. It is because of who He is. He is the same as the God we read about. He is the great creator. To make heaven and earth He had to have all power. Remember, your God is all powerful. He made the whole universe. He can do what needs to be done for you.

“Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 124:8 (NIV)
Psalm 124 is a song of thanks sung by God’s people after they had been delivered from a difficult situation. God had just saved them from a threatening time and David composed the song of thanks. It was so appropriate to thank God by singing His praises. David admits earlier in the song that they would certainly have been destroyed if God had not helped them. Let’s not forget how much we depend on God’s help. And, let us not forget who He is. He is the creator of all. Do you need His help today? Call on Him, the One who made you. He will certainly help.

“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17 (NIV)
I believe that God wants His people today to know His concern for our welfare. He hasn’t changed during these centuries since the time of Isaiah. What He wanted to do for the people of Israel, He wants to do for us today. Our God is our guide and He wants us to depend on Him to show us the way we should go. And His underlying motive is our welfare. He knows what is best for us and He wants us to trust Him to teach us what is best. So let us not presume to choose for ourselves. Let us look to our loving Father to teach us and guide us.
