“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.” Deuteronomy 7:6 (NASB)
These words and promise were spoken to the Children of Israel, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It had been 400 years or more since Joseph moved his brothers and father to Egypt. But it had been a short time since God supernaturally led them out of slavery in Egypt. God has given them the Law through Moses and now was preparing them to enter the Promised Land. God promised in verses 1-2 of this chapter to deliver and defeat the seven nations who were greater and stronger than Israel. It was God’s sovereign choice to make this promise and to choose these people to be His people. As the verse says, “out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.” Do we realize this is how God has chosen us? Israel’s descendants had no part in how God choose them. God made it centuries before when Abram lived Ur of the Chaldeans. We also have no part of God choosing us. Spiritually bankrupt, we can't claim credit. It was all God's will alone to choose us in Christ before the foundation of the World. (Ephesians 1:4)
