“If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.” - 1 Peter 4:14 (ESV)
Many Christians today do not know first-hand how dangerous believing in Jesus Christ can be. We’re so used to freedom we expect things to always be the same. When we see threats to our freedom our reaction is often anger or fear. But anger and fear might be evidence that we don’t view ourselves as sojourners and exiles on this earth. Peter (1 Peter 2:11 NASB) urges us to live us as aliens and strangers in this world. Have we settled into this world so we’re comforted with how things are? We don’t think of ourselves as Paul did – citizens of heaven. (Philippians 3:20). Do we ever wonder how we will do when our life hangs on our confession of Jesus Christ? With a gun to your head you’re asked, “Are you a Christian?” Or someone with a large sword asks “Do you renounce Jesus?” Our verse is a promise of hope. Peter, once the denier of Christ, says to us that in the moment we are insulted or our life is threatened “a Spirit of glory and of God will be resting on us.” The Holy Spirit is promised to give us strength.
