March 31 – He Thinks and Cares

“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?  Yet You have made him a little lower than God,  And You crown him with glory and majesty!”  -Psalm 8:3-5  (NASB)

Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to look up into a very darkened but clear sky at night and view the Milky Way Galaxy above might understand the question David is posing in this Psalm.  The whole Psalm 8 needs to be read in context because it teaches us so much about the LORD’s relationship with His creatures.  The answer to the questions asked in verse 4 are found in verse 5 and following.  But are they really the answer to why Our Creator, our LORD, the Almighty God has created and positioned us, His creatures where they are described here?  In all the vast universe beyond the itty-bitty part we can see in the sky, God made man significant – created him in the image and likeness of God set him to exercise dominion over the rest of creation (Genesis 1:26–28 NASB). The amazing promise from God is that we are included in this significance.  Sin came into God’s creation and messed up a perfect world but Jesus came and opened a way for that perfection to be redeemed. God takes thought of us and He cares for us – that is our promise.
