November 15 – Our Indescribable Privilege to Know

“ God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” ”  -  Exodus 3:14a (ESV)
“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”   John 8:56-58 (ESV)

We hear often about “privilege” and most times these days it makes privilege something we should be ashamed of.  Why? Because the common thought is that privilege that is not earned but given or acquired by some other means is not deserved.  That is correct but it is also misleading as to the goodness of privilege.  Our two passages today reveal to us the glorious name of God.  When God said to Moses that his name was I AM WHO I AM, he was declaring Himself to be infinite, absolute, self-determining, and accountable only to Himself, not to us, or our reasoning.  In the second passage Jesus makes the same claim to those testing and questioning His authority. They knew exactly what He was claiming to be and took up stones to kill Him.   Our promise is that in Jesus Christ, we who are born of God by faith have the indescribable privilege of personally knowing Yahweh, as our Father – I AM WHO I AM – the God who exists, never changes, and to whom all should conform their lives.
