“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” - James 1:12 (NIV)
James, the author of this letter did not believe in Jesus, his half-brother's ministry or purpose at first. But He did come to believe and was one of the earliest witnesses of Jesus' resurrection. James knew that if our faith is never tested, there really is no faith at all. True faith in God and in Jesus Christ our Savior must be tested and proven true. It is why faith exists for us at all. We have faith in God and in Jesus because we believe what He did for us saved us from permanent death. We learn to Love God through the testing of our faith. The promise here seems almost materialist except the crown of life is received after being proven by the test of our faith. The crowns we received because our faith stands the test will be given back to Jesus who is the one that made it possible. Our love for Him will grow beyond description if we persevere when our faith is tested.
