“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.” Hebrews 6:19-20a (NIV)
Our verse today reminds us of the floor pattern of the Jewish temple when it stood in Jerusalem.* Inside the temple there was an inner room – called the Holy of Hollies – which was entered only by the high priest and only once on one day each year. This room represented the presence of God in the midst of His people. This temple at Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome in the year 70 AD** but it only represented heavenly and eternal truths. For us now, Jesus has entered the presence of God in heaven and He is there to advocate for us and to pray for us. What our verse tells us is that our hope and our assurance is based on what Jesus is doing for us in God's presence. And, that is a hope that does not disappoint and is like an anchor for our souls that we can depend on. Friends, today we have this promise that will never fail and we can depend on what Jesus is doing for each of us today.
