We might think that if the Lord shows us His compassion and is gracious to us He has put aside His justice. But this verse tells us that it is because of His justice that He shows us His compassion. God knows that we are not perfect and that we make mistakes. He has, there, offered to take care of our mistakes. He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins and He has offered to forgive us if we accept what Jesus did for us. So in His justice God must keep His promise. If we trust Him He will forgive and He longs to do that for us in His compassion. Let us always keep that in mind and let us always trust Him.

“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” Isaiah 30:18 (NIV)
