May 16 – Learn and Obey

“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.” John 13:13 (NASB)

In Scripture many names are used to identify God whether He spoke them as God the Father or as the Son of God, each is significant in its meaning. During Jesus’ time on this earth, he taught people about Himself using, several names by which people could refer to Him.  In today's verse two names were used especially by Jesus' disciples expressing what Jesus Christ was for them. These names represent what Jesus is for us too. He is our Teacher and is involved in our lives daily teaching us His truth. We need His teaching and we should be learning from Him all through our lives.  Each moment is “a teaching moment” if we pay attention.  Jesus, by title and essence is our Lord but let's not forget that this name is manifest through our obedience. We must obey our Lord.  There’s no place for us to say, “No, Lord” and continue to call Him Lord. As we think of these two names, let's remember to be learning and obeying Him each day. He teaches us and directs each steps of our lives which we need to follow – learn and obey what we learn.

May 16 – What He Is

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” John 13:13 (NIV)

These were spoken by Jesus to His followers while he was here on earth.  He was confirming their assertion of who He was when they called him “Teacher” and “Lord.”  Just as those who followed Him then recognized who Jesus was to them.  We who now follow Him in spirit by faith also recognize Jesus as our Teacher and our Lord.  He has promised in this verse that He is our Teacher and He is our Lord and that makes a difference in how we live day to day.  He has much to teach us every day.  He knows how God wants us to live and He knows what God wants us to do with our lives.  Let's be sure we are following His lead and learning what He is teaching us.  That is how we can know that we are being guided by our Savior Jesus all through each day.  It is also important that we recognize Him as our Lord for He is in control of all things and of our activities.  Let's avoid the conflict that we might encounter when we try to control our own decisions apart from His teaching.  As our Lord, let's submit to his perfect guidance.

May 16 – Learn and Obey

“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.” John 13:13 (NASB)

During His time on this earth, while he was teaching people about Himself and who He was, Jesus gave several names by which people could refer to Him.  We see two in today's verse. These are the names which were used especially by Jesus' disciples and express what Jesus Christ was for them. The same names represent what Jesus is for us too. He is our Teacher and is involved in our lives daily teaching us truths which we need to know. So what should our reaction be? We need to be open to His teaching and we should be learning lessons from Him all through our lives.  Jesus is our Lord and we call Him Lord but let's not forget that this requires obedience. We must obey our Lord.  As we think of these two names, let's remember to be learning and obeying Him each day. What He teaches us gives us direction for our lives which we need to follow – learn and obey what we learn.

May 7 – Taught and Learned

“It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.” John 6:45 (NASB)

These words recorded in the Gospel of John were spoken by Jesus, the Son of God who came into this world from heaven.  While he lived on earth, He went about about teaching many about the wonderful truth of God and Himself.  Jesus knew that God the Father was also engaged in teaching people.  God the Father was preparing people to come to Jesus to hear more. We recognize that God is our great teacher. He teaches us  in so many different ways.  He has been teaching us through our experiences this past week so that today we will come close to Jesus and let Him be our friend. As we read our Bible or hear teachers and preachers read it and teach us from it, let remember that these are the ways for God to teach us what He wants us to know.

July 10 – Following the Teacher

“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” John 13:13 (NIV)

The last night that Jesus was with His disciples, before He went to the cross to die, He makes a statement which is our verse today. Jesus applied these words to the special occasion there with His disciples but we believe that we can also call Jesus our teacher. This is because that is what He is. He teaches us through His words which are recorded in the Bible. We believe his recorded words are for our guidance each day of our lives including today. Lets be sure we don't neglect to read what He teaches us in the Bible. Jesus is also our Lord and we want to obey Him. When we hear his voice speaking it is our Lord teaching us how to live  – lets be sure to follow and obey.
