October 6 – Words for Strength

“And this word is the good news that was preached to you. So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.  Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. ”  1 Peter 1:25b-2:1-3  (ESV)

From out of the Word of God, which stands forever, we find today’s promise from God. He has given us these Words for strength to our spiritual life. We can think of it as the milk that is essential for a newborn to grow big and in strength. The Word is just as essential for us. The Word of God, we considered yesterday in our post is true and will not fade away, we have it secure. It is the good news of Christ Jesus. For all who have in faith believing come to Jesus for salvation and for eternal life; have tasted the benefit of faith and know that our Lord is good.  The Word of God helps us grow into the children of God we have been called to be. We have been saved through this Word and we grow strong in our faith through this Word.  We are not left to fend for ourselves, having to make our way by ourselves, God has given us His love through the Scriptures for this purpose: to grow into mature servanthood and develop passion and love of our Savior. It’s a natural thing to want more of God’s word.

September 17 – Desire Milk?

“like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, 3 if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.”  1 Peter 2:2-3 (NASB)

The Apostle Peter writes in his first letter to believers across the known world and gives them encouragement by suggesting that they behave like babies.  The picture that Peter uses in these verses is that of a baby who is so enthusiastic about drinking its milk.  It does not need to be forced to take its nourishment. In fact a baby will let everyone know when it is hungry and wants more milk.  Its body has found that this is just what it needs to grow.  That is how earnest we should be as believers of Jesus – we should have a passionate hunger for the Word of God.  So with our Christian lives, we have found the source of true spiritual nourishment in the word of God.  It is like pure spiritual milk and it does help us to grow spiritually – to become the people that God wants us to be. So, if we have tasted the goodness of God, we will want to know more about it.  Our faith will grow and increase in strength.

October 20 – Feeding on the Word

“Your words were found and I ate them, And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; For I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.”  Jeremiah 15:16 (NASB)

Jeremiah, a prophet of God delivered many messages to the people which God gave to him.  But, Jeremiah also spoke to God on his own behalf as we have in today's passage.  We believe that these words were recorded for our benefit and are intended to teach us the attitude that we should have when God speaks to us through the Bible.  God speaks to us in many ways and each time we receive His word, it is like receiving food, spiritual food for our spiritual life.  Why would the words from the Bible be so good for us?  Because they bring joy and delight to our heart for they are the Words of God and the Promises of God.  God has called each of us by His name to a life of worship and praise and sharing His truth.  May we learn to develop a hunger for His Word today, it is good for our soul.
