April 1 – I Am One and Only

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” – Revelation 1:8

The “I Am” in our verse today appears two more times in the Book of The Revelation of Jesus Christ. When we find in Scripture the combination of “I am” or “I am He” with the claim that He is the First and the Last, it is most certainly identifying the Son of God, Jesus Christ as the one and only God ever. Spoken by Jesus this is the claim that there is only one God and it is He.  In Isaiah 43:11 God says through Isaiah “I am the LORD and besides me there is no savior.” Reflect back to the words of Jesus in John 14:6 when He told His disciples just prior to His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane. “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  This is a consistent promise throughout the Bible that God is One. He is the One and only God. There is no other (Isaiah 45:22).  No matter what we hear from the world religions, God has spoken “I am He and there is no other." We trust that promise from the mouth of God.

August 18 – Surrounded by Faithfulness

“O Lord God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty Lord?  Your faithfulness also surrounds You.”   Psalm 89:8 (NASB)

The book of Psalms is the song book of our Bible and many of the songs have expressions of praise to the Lord as does our verse today.  This verse praises God for two of His attributes.  It mentions His great power and of course when He is called the Almighty or Mighty Lord, that means that He is all powerful.  He can do everything and nothing is impossible for Him to accomplish.  Our verse also speaks of God's faithfulness.  It says that His faithfulness surrounds Him.  That is an interesting way of describing this attribute, isn't it?  What does it mean?  One way to explain it is that no matter from what angle we look at it, God is faithful. No matter what our needs are, no matter who needs His help, no matter where the need is, or where we are, God is faithful in every way.  It is a promise that God's faithfulness envelops Him and everything He does.  What is our need today?  God is with us surrounded by His faithfulness we are with Him because we abide in and with Almighty God.

April 9 – Sons and Daughters of Him

“And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18 (NASB)

As we read the New Testament portion of our Bible we find promises which come from words which God said to the people of Israel during the time of the Old Testament. Today's verse is one of these promises. God had used very similar words when speaking to His people before Jesus came into this world.  In  those days he was talking to the descendants of Abraham. In the context of our verse today this promise applies to all of us who believe in Jesus, regardless of our race or nationality and regardless of where we live on this earth. It is a wonderful truth and promise that we can turn to the great God of this universe and recognize Him as our Eternal Father and remembering that He looks at you as His son or His daughter.  This is an encouragement for us as we apply the promise of this verse and believe it. Then we can live it too! We are sons and daughters of God Almighty. Doesn't that lift your spirit today?

March 22 – Call on The Name You Need

“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”  Psalm 9:10 (NIV)

We have mentioned before on this blog that the Bible gives several names for God. These names express various characteristics and attributes of God. When the psalmist in our verse today mentions how we can know God's name and therefore trust in Him the various names come to mind.  Let's think of a few examples. When our hearts are disturbed let's remember that our Lord is known as God of Peace. When we face a difficult situation which calls for divine power let's remember that our Lord is called God Almighty. If people turn against us let's not forget that God is Love. These and other names of our God prove to us that no matter what our need is our God has promised to fill it. He will never forsake those who seek Him.

March 3 – Like None Other

“Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” Psalm 77:13-14 (NIV)

We've been considering the ways that God revealed Himself to Abraham as God Almighty. Many since the time of Abraham have recognized how true that name is.  The Bible records many instances when God displayed His power to His chosen people Israel. His people were reminded often that He is God Almighty.  But our verse reminds us that God displays His power among the people and that means people of all nations and all races.  We can see it happening if we have faith.  And this is true today all around the world. Yes, God is demonstrating His power and drawing people to Himself in many places. We can rejoice that we have an Almighty God and that we can depend on Him to show us His power.

More about the names of God.
