January 25 – Yearning Again for God

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” Psalm 42:1-2 (ESV)

There is a word in our verse today that is infrequently used in the meaning the psalmist used it. A deer “pants” for flowing streams. The image is of a desperately thirsty deer in need of clean moving water. We might say the deer longs for a drink when it’s thirsty and it looks for a nice cool stream of water because of past experiences. The deer has learned how good it is to drink from a clear stream. The deer’s thirst has been satisfied that way and now it longs for that to be repeated when it’s thirsty. When our souls have been satisfied by close contact with God we, too, will long to repeat this experience over and over again. Our promise is that satisfaction happens when we appear before God, We know from past experience and our inner being longs for more. It is only God who can give us that full satisfaction – and that is why we seek it only from Him and not from world around us. Tempted to look elsewhere, by experience we’ve learned that God is the one who fulfills the promises. Let's seek Him today.
