September 28 – He Already Knows – How Not To Worry Part 5

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” Matthew 6:31–32  (ESV)

We have considered five posts with one more to go using Matthew 6:25–34 which contains at least six promises given by Jesus to help us fight against unbelief and be free from worry or anxiety. Today we see another promise and words of wisdom from Jesus. The worry about what we eat, drink and wear is unnecessary because it changes nothing. It is God who knows we have these needs just as every person in the world does. Jesus in this context reminds us that the Gentiles seek after all these things. Worry is a shared practice among all people. The Jews at Jesus’ time were very bigoted toward non-Jews and all non-Jews were unclean Gentiles. That included anyone who was not a Jew by birth or by conversion had become a Jew. The Jews followed the Mosaic Law and a multitude of additional traditions and laws. Jesus drawing the comparison that Jews and Gentiles are not so different when it comes to anxiety about essential things. God our heavenly Father knows our every need.  If He knows our need will he not make certain that those needs are met? (see Philippians 4:19)
