September 1 –Being Silent to Hear

“Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay. Let me have silence, and I will speak, and let come on me what may.  Job 13:12-13 (ESV)

These words were spoken by Job to his so-called friends who were present to comfort Job but in all they actually caused him more dismay. For all they tried to do was to help, even with words that expressed God’s majesty, justice, and sovereignty; but they were clumsy at it and failed to apply their help correctly in Job’s life.  We all face pain and sorrow over loss of family friends, home and business.  In the example of Job’s life, why he had suffered so much loss and physical pain is difficult for us to understand now and certainly was then.  But Job actually wanted silence from them. Their words were doing nothing for Job.  Job intended to say his piece and face the consequences.  We tend to believe, like Job that we can help God resolve our circumstances by explaining ourselves.  Job will find out this is not so. Two verses later Job says, “Though he slay me, I will hope in him;” (Job 13:15)  Today our promise that is not so obvious. God promises to speak if we will be silent and stop arguing, complaining and justifying ourselves. God knows us, we’re to listen and learn.
