“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.” - Acts 2:1-3 (NASB)
In ten days is the Day of Pentecost. It is observed seven weeks after Passover. "Pentecost" is a Greek word, transliterated into English, that means "fiftieth." This Feast of Harvest, or Feast of Weeks fell on the fiftieth day after Passover in late May or early June. There were many people in Jerusalem on this day when God fulfilled the promise He had made when Jesus told His disciples that He would ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit. On this day, the Holy Spirit came upon all who believed to dwell within them for eternity. In Acts 1:4-5, 8, Jesus reminds them of this promise and that it came from God the Father. Its fulfillment happened on the Day of Pentecost. It was the day that God established His church. What we have in this verse is a baptism of grace—that involved the promised Holy Spirit and the presence and power of God—symbolized by fire. It is this promise that holds true for us today. When we believe what the Scriptures have declared about Jesus, we are adopted as children of God and the Holy Spirit indwells us for God’s glory and our preservation in Christ.
