May 10 – Making Us Right

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”  -2 Corinthians 5:20  (ESV)

The promise that we have today was first given those God created thousands of centuries before the Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians.  Paul is affirming that promise in today’s verse because in Jesus Christ God fulfilled that promise.  First recorded in Genesis and then repeated many times through history afterwards, God promised redemption to mankind.  Having willfully chosen to  disobey the commandment, Eve and Adam found themselves in a fallen state of sin and kicked out of paradise.  Before eating fruit from the forbidden tree, both Adam and Eve who were created in righteousness and enjoyed close relationship and communion with God.  But the disobedience was sin and sin corrupted them.  No longer righteous but bearing the curse of sin, only God could provide a way to be made righteous and it required a perfect man to live and die in place of all from Adam to the end of the world.  God did this for our sake and let Jesus go to the cross carrying the penalty for sin for us.  All who believe this is the truth have a life that never will die – an eternal life with God.
