April 9 – No Alternatives

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”  - John 6:35 (ESV)

The Apostle John wrote this Gospel for a very specific reason. He tells us in the last verses (John 20:30-31 ESV). that we may believe Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah, the Son of God; and that by believing we may receive life. The words recorded in today's passage were spoken by Jesus. He had miraculously fed more that 5000 men and those with them.  He started with only a boy’s lunch basket – five small loaves and two fish.  He fed them all and they wanted more. they followed Jesus wherever He went.  Jesus said that through faith in Him, He becomes a limitless fountain of satisfying life in us.  This life lasts forever and leads us to heaven.  Our promise is that our soul-thirst is satisfied with Jesus. He was the answer and supply for those who hungered and thirsted for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). In Jesus our search ends.  He promises perfect satisfaction and there is nothing better and nothing beyond. Second best does not satisfy. There is no alternative to the satisfaction He supplies. This accounts for why such faith in Jesus quashes the power of sin and enables our obedience to His Word.
