“But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” And Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible to him who believes. Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”” Mark 9:22-24 (NASB)
The distraught father had brought his demon-possessed son to the disciples of Jesus asking them to set his son free and healed. They were not able to do it. Now Jesus approaches and the father pleads for His help. His doubts that even Jesus will be able to are heard in the father’s question “But if you can do anything…” Do we not do the same? We ask God for His intervention and help in circumstances that are most pressing on us but the results we want do not come. Isn’t it then that we might question God with an “If you can…please do something” plea? Our promise today is simple and straightforward statement by Jesus. “All things are possible.” It is not a lack of power but a lack of faith that often restricts the results we are praying for. Jesus healed many who did not have faith but this time, Now, He emphasizes the importance of the father’s faith. God wants us to fully and unequivocally believe that He can do what we ask. But like the father, we may need to ask for help to overcome our lack of faith.
