“Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” 1 John 3:18-21 (ESV)
Our selection today has more than one promise from God. Reading and meditating on the passage brings these promises clearly to our mind. John the Apostle who wrote the Gospel of John also wrote the three short epistles with his name. John focused a good deal on the love of God that sent Jesus into the world. Even though love is a subject in this greater passage, the truth in these three verses is assurance we know the truth. We are promised that the evidence, the proof that we are of the truth is demonstrated in the manner that we love one another (1 John 3:16-17). Also, love is in our deeds not just our talk. As Jesus loved us and did what He came to do, we are to love each other. If this is the pattern of our lives in Christ, we will know with all assurance that the Truth abides in us. Born again through faith in Jesus Christ is confirmed by the way we love others – beyond our connections; and love each other – within our connections. Our hearts are reassured even when we have condemning doubts because God knows our hearts and overrules the doubts.
