March 16 – More Than Sparrows

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God.  Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.”  Luke 12:6-7  (ESV)

We learn from our verse that even the most insignificant of God’s creation matters to God. Sparrows are often thought of as useless birds.  They aren’t pretty as blue birds or cardinals. They make poor useless nests and abandon them.  When Jesus was walking on the Earth, sparrows were bought for sacrifices.  For those with limited funds, sparrows were an acceptable sacrifice at the temple.  In Luke sparrows were less expensive –.04 each. In Matthew one bought sparrows for .05 each.  The lesson is that sparrows were so very inexpensive most people would not have much regard for them.  But God considers and doesn’t forget or overlook sparrows. When they are sacrificed or otherwise fall to the ground, He is mindful and does not forget or overlook us because to God we are of more value than many sparrows.  We have no fear of God forgetting us or not being mindful of us.  He provides all we do need and we don’t need to be anxious about any of anything.  The sparrows of our yard enjoy great freedom because God cares about them and I know He cares even more about me.
