“God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” - Matthew 5:4 (NLT)
Do you know the joy of forgiveness? Every true Christian does. We know how wonderful it is to be forgiven of our sin. As children of God and possessors of eternal life in Christ we still struggle with doing God’s will every single time. But we know that joy and happiness or blessedness is ours because we receive from God comfort for grieving over sin in our life. Even though we are forgiven by God, we all still sin – that is the nature we are shackled with. Our reaction is to mourn over the fact of this condition. For the non-believer, it is a grim existence because there is no comfort. For those who believe, God promises comfort when we grieve and confess our sin. We receive forgiveness each time we repent and our relationship with God is made right. We are in a sort of constant spiritual paradox where we’re sorry about our sinful acts but happy about our constant forgiveness. We can know we’re mourners because we’re comforted and that brings blessed happiness. We can say “happy are the sad” when our sadness is for the right reasons.
