But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.- Matthew 9:6 (NIV)
Jesus Christ was frequently challenged by “the Jewish authorities” when he would proclaim someone’s sins forgiven. They accused Jesus of blasphemy because they did not accept His claim that He was one with God. For those of us who are in Christ, the penalties for our sins are gone. They were last seen on the back of our Sin Bearer as he headed outside of the city wall and to the cross and hung there until He died. When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have your forsaken me!” He entered the wilderness on our behalf and carried our sin away. As we give God our guilt through our confession and ask for His forgiveness for our sinful acts, Jesus promises us in this verse that He has authority to forgive us our sins. Not only our sins and all sins that all people confess to Him. We confess to Jesus ourselves of our own free will and we do not need any human agent as our go-between to affirm and absolve our sins. God the Holy Spirit advocates for us directly. Jesus has promised it to be so. Let’s believe it today.
