“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. ” - Matthew 6:31-32 (NASB)
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gave many promises to his disciples and the multitude of people listening. We have been considering seven in the passage at the end of Chapter 6 of Matthew. (6:25-34) Today's promise is another one giving us reason to not worry about our need to eat and drink and what we will have to wear. Specifically Jesus tells us to not be anxious about these things. We need not be acting as those who do not believe in God and who are constantly fretting over "what's next," because we have assurances from our Lord God. Gentiles, as Jesus used the word at the time were those not in the nation of Israel and those who did not believe in the God of the Jews. For our context, it has come to mean “not a Jew” even for those who do believe. Our promise is the assurance that God is not ignorant of our needs. He knows exactly what we need, He cares. He will act to supply our need when the time is best.
