September 3 – How To Know Love

“We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
“Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.”  1 John 3:16, 18  (NASB)

These two verses remind us of the real example of love which Jesus gave when He offered Himself to all through his death on the cross.  Love is manifested in what we do, not so much in what we say.  We might profess to love God and each other but our actions may belie our profession.  By laying down His life for us Jesus made it possible for us to gain eternal life by personally accepting His death in our place.  Between these to verses (v. 17) we are given an example how false confession of love can be recognized.  Saying one thing, doing the opposite demonstrates the absence of God's love.  The second  instruction is that we our profession of love for one another be seen by actions that demonstrate true love.  That is what “in deed and truth” means.  It is in the next verse (v. 19) we find a promise.  We are confirmed and assured in our heart when the truth of our love is seen in our actions backing up our words.
