“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
This may be a very familiar verse. It is one we have considered more than once on this blog. In today's world, we might read this verse and see a promise that God will fulfill whatever we desire if we first take great delight in Him. That can be a correct lesson but there is one consideration that takes this promise deeper. From where do the desires of our heart first come before they are fulfilled? They come from where we focus our hearts and minds. This promise is first that our delight in the Lord results in heart desires that are righteous and good and come from God. When we make the Lord our joy, the desires that grow in your heart are most likely the ones He plants. By nature we do not desire good things but by the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, our natural desires are replaced by desires that please God. These are the things that bring lasting peace and satisfaction—not the things we think we want or strive to achieve apart from God.
