“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
For many the idea of having peace means having no conflict with others or anything. That is not quite what the peace God gives us is about. During the last time Jesus shared a meal with his disciples, He gave them reason to be aware of what was ahead and He told them things that are true in order for them to be prepared and comforted. The things Jesus told them were intended to give them peace but a much different kind of peace than they or we might expect. Jesus promised them that they would have trouble as followers of His truth, way, and life. He also promised them that He had already overcome the world. He had not yet been crucified when He told them this but it was still a done deal. Jesus promised them reason to take heart when the trouble came. Persecution, tribulation, trials, and confrontations were promised but so was His peace. As he says also at this time in another verse, His peace is not like the peace the world provides. The peace of Jesus is something we who believe and have received Jesus as our Savior possess within.
