June 11 – Created New For A Purpose

“...and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”  Ephesians 4:24 (ESV)

The context of this verse is important (Ephesians 4:17-24) but too long for our purposes here.  The Apostle Paul is teaching the believers in Ephesus about our transformation from what we were and how we used to live to what we become and are in Christ.  Being in Christ by faith, believing in Him, and accepting the free gift of salvation has made us new creatures no longer bound to the old way of our sinful nature.  This is what is meant by being born again.  Yes, by faith we have a new self by God's grace and we have been created after the likeness of God and that's what God has in mind when we become His children by faith. So the apostle tells us to wear this new self like a new permanent outfit. This verse defines how this new life shows itself.  It is by demonstrating true righteousness and holiness.  These are characteristics of God. If we are to be like God we will be righteous in all our doings and we will live holy lives.  This is our promise and we can live according to it because God has provided the way for us to do so through faith in Him and His Word.
