“Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” John 14:23 (ESV)
These words, spoken by Jesus, were some more of the words spoken at the last Passover supper He had with His disciples. This supper happened just before He was arrested, crucified, died, and then resurrected to a new life. Although they are words of promise and comfort given to those who had been with Jesus during his ministry on Earth, we believe and know that the promises here are for us who believe as well. Jesus' words, which we keep in faith believing, tell us that Jesus watches over our lives and He knows if we love him and when we are obeying His teaching. All that Jesus knows, our heavenly Father knows for they are one in God. We can believe and trust this promise that God loves us too and that He has made His home with us. This is a very precious part of the teaching of our verse today. While we may pay a little more attention to Jesus' last days on Earth during Passion Week, we can know that this promise is given to us for all time, for every day and for eternity too. This is true because when God makes His home with us He gives us the eternal life He promised us in Jesus. Jesus' death and resurrection is ours too. His life is our life forever. He lives in us if we have believed and received the gift of life He offers today.
