December 24 – Joining the Host to Sing

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”   Luke 2:14  (ESV)

We visit again this verse in the Gospel  of Luke, the song which was sung by a multitude of the heavenly Host.  Who were these in the multitude*?   We don't know exactly but we generally consider them to be God's holy angels who dwell in His presence and serve Him.  Their singing that night for the Shepherds outside of Bethlehem was done to praise God for what He was doing by sending His Son to earth to live as a human on earth from the day of His birth to the day of His crucifixion.  The singing of these praises, we believe, reached not only the shepherds in the fields but also to God in heaven.  They were praising God in the 'highest places' and there is no place higher than heaven.  This was not the first time the host of angels had praised God.  It was perhaps the first time anyone on earth heard the Host singing but it has been sung in heaven before and since.  This is praise that goes on continually and God, our Lord and Savior is worthy to receive this praise.  His promise to to bring peace on earth for those who please Him.  Believing in God is how we begin to please Him.  Following His commandments is how we please him each day.

* Basically, the word host refers to a great number of individuals or to an army. Modified by the word heavenly, hosts becomes a great number of angelic beings forming a celestial army under God’s command.   https://www.gotquestions.org/heavenly-hosts.html
