December 19 – Promised Joy In Obedience

“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.” John 15:10-11  (NASB)

The “Great Joy” which was a predicted result of the birth of Jesus and revealed by the angel to the Shepherds near Bethlehem the night He was born, was promised for all people.  After His years of public ministry, Jesus taught about this joy.  It was during His last night with His disciples before He would be crucified and die.  We think of Jesus sometimes as a “Man of Sorrows” but He offered His joy and promised to share it with those who believe and receive the gift of life He offers.  The “great joy which will be for all the people*” promised by the angel, was and is indeed the Joy of Jesus which He shares with all who choose to receive it.  What was it that gave Jesus His joy?  His joy came in doing His Father's will; in fulfilling God the Father's plan for our redemption and our salvation and our reconciliation to Him.  This joy that is promised comes to us when we please our Heavenly Father and our Savior through obedience and faithful service.
