“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
On the last evening that Jesus was with His disciples before he was to die the next day on the cross, He had many words of encouragement for them. The most detailed record of what he said to them is recorded in the Gospel of John chapters 13 through 17. The last verse of chapter 16 has the words of today's verse as Jesus tells them why he had just told them all “these things”. We are living in the same world in which Jesus was leaving His disciples. Many things have changed since those days but there are still troubles in this world, as long as we live here we'll encounter trouble and our Lord knows what we are facing. His love is promised to us and so is His peace. He still wants us to have peace in our hearts, trusting in Him. He is in control of every situations which we face. Jesus wants to say to us as He said to His disciples in our verse, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” Because of that and through him we are to be overcomes.
