September 7 – Trust. Joy. Peace.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Our verse today has a recurring promise – trust in God results in joy and peace. For those facing great difficulty with overwhelming challenges, sorrow, loss, fear, and discouragement, they can find encouragement in God's words here. This verse also reminds us of another aspect of God's work in the lives of his followers. It reminds us that He is the God of hope and that He wants us to overflow with hope. For this He has provided to us the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to remember that when the Bible speaks of hope it means an attitude of expectancy. It doesn't mean a “wishful thinking” which is how most people use the word. What our God wants to instill into our attitude is an expectancy which looks into the future, looking to God to fulfill His promises. God has a great future planned for us and He wants us to expect to participate in it with a hope that overflows.
