July 27 – Setting Our Confidence In God

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.” Psalm 118: 8-9 (NASB)

We might ask what it means to take refuge in the Lord? We are glad that the psalmist really explains it by what he says in the last part of each verse. There he uses the word trust. So to take refuge in the Lord is to trust in Him. Our verses remind us that it is better to put our confidence in the Lord than in any human being, including even the most influential or powerful person such as a Prince, a King, or a President. So if we do have to depend sometimes on the help of any person around us lets be sure that our real dependence is on  our God. If we are helped by someone else at times, we can recognize that God uses other people to give us help we need.
