“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” John 5:39-40 (NIV)
During His time with people on earth, Jesus did many great things. Some of the religious leaders were threatened by Jesus and would question His authority. This passage is one of those times and these are words which Jesus spoke in response to their questioning. Jesus was speaking to to some who were studying the Old Testament but they failed to believe in Him. It is through studying the Bible and believing what it teaches about Jesus Christ – in both the Old and New Testament – that we learn that we are promised eternal life. From that we can believe what we have learned and those of us who do believe through faith receive the gift of eternal life – we become children of God. So as we continue to study the Bible and listen to others teach it, let's not forget to focus our thoughts and our faith on our wonderful Savior and Lord Jesus Christ.
