“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 (NIV)

There are many things miraculous about the birth of Jesus and one of them is the way His name was chosen. When a child is expected parents give some thought as to what they will name that baby. Not so with Jesus. We remember that the angel Gabriel first instructed Mary what the baby should be called, and then when an angel came to Joseph, he gave the same instructions. His name means a lot to us. In the Old Testament the name Joshua in the Hebrew language meant that God is the one who saves. In the New Testament the Greek form of the same is Jesus with the same meaning. And what it means for us is that He saves us from the power of sin. We can rejoice in this!
