“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.” Ephesians 5:1 (NIV)

Though this is the first verse of the chapter, the word “therefore” indicates that there had been other teaching in the previous chapter. In chapter four we are reminded how Christians should live, what they should avoid, and what they should practice. What God wants us to do is to imitate Him, to think as He does, to feel as He does, and to do what He would do in every situation. And we are asked to imitate God as dearly loved children. Isn’t that what children do? If they sense that they are loved by their parents, they try to imitate them. We know that God loves us and, as His children, He imparts to us His nature enabling us to imitate Him.
